Forest Ground

Hi everyone! Here's some forest ground assets I created to continue exploring different photogrammetry and scanning methods. Everything in this scene was either scanned from objects in my back yard or created from scratch in Substance Designer. I used RealityScan for the first time and have to say I was really impressed! The ability to have real time feedback on how your images are aligning in unbelievably helpful. I look forward to seeing what refinements they continue to make to the app. All of the scene images were rendered in real time via Unreal Engine 5. Most of the geo was converted to nanite which let me keep my poly count relatively high without sacrificing too much performance. Learned a ton and am really excited to take what I learned into my next project!

The pine needles and leaves were scanned via multi angle lighting. Scan outputs were then processed in Substance Designer and scattered using SpeedTree.

Here's the main nodes I used to compile my multi angle photos into albedo and normal maps. They worked really well for smaller thin objects that were difficult to scan using RealityScan or similar products.

After compiling the multi angle images, I used the Shape Splatter node (with the Shape Splatter Blend Color node) to scatter the pine needles before sending to SpeedTree

I used SpeedTree to scatter the pine needles. This made it super easy to quickly iterate, create additional variations, and generate LODs to keep performance from going too crazy.

SpeedTree was also used to scatter the various leaves. This made it super easy to quickly iterate, create additional variations, and generate LODs to keep performance from going too crazy.
